Ibn Kathīr was a Damascus-based historian, hadith scholar, and commentator. His Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿaẓīm emphasizes interpretation of the Qurʾān by the Qurʾān, prophetic reports, and the statements of early authorities.
Its combination of accessibility, narrative material, and hadith evaluation has made it one of the most widely read Sunni commentaries.
