Biography

A scholar in context

Al-Bayḍāwī was a jurist, theologian, and commentator whose Anwār al-tanzīl became one of the most widely studied concise tafsīrs in the premodern curriculum.

The commentary is known for compressed linguistic analysis and for synthesizing earlier exegetical and theological materials in a form that generated a large commentary tradition of its own.
