In Jewish midrashim, the people who dwelt beyond the Sambation are called "Janus".

This is related to Dhu Yanus, the kings of Himyar, and refers to the Yonah (doves) of the Tubbiad kings who had intermarried with the Himyar royal dynasty.

This dove is the same symbol as that adorning the duplicate "ark of the covenant" stored in a Church in Axum, lost by Dhu Nuwas, the last king of Himyar in his battle with the Ethopians in 525 CE.

Sambation itself, originally was called "nachal chol" which means river which flows on a weekday (and not on the sabbath). But another translation is river of sand, i.e. the Rub' Al-Khali.
