Church fathers tended to refer to the religion of any independent Baptists as Hanputa because they once represented the only real non-Jewish, non-Christian, monotheistic competition and sought to lump them together with the theurgists like Julian Hanpa as also be seen in the story of Zayd ibn Amir ibn Naufal "the Hanif".
